Travel Briefing:

Kavaledurga, situated 16kms from Thirthahalli in Shimoga district is a place known for its history. The Kavaledurga Fort is a hilltop fort built in the 9th century and is a testament to the detailed planning and construction undertaken by the people of those times. In the 14th Century the fort was renovated by Cheluvarangappa, a Belagutti king and later by the Keladi ruler Venkatappa Nayaka who added seven battlements to protect the fort. It got the name Kauledurga as it was situated near Kauli village. It is said that Hyder Ali conquered the fort during his time(1763) and that during his time the fort got the name Kavaledurga. Legend goes that Hyder Ali left a group of soldiers here known as ‘Kavalu Gaararu’ in the native language and hence obtained the name Kavalu Durga.

The fort is ruined to a large extent and a only three temples of the original fifteen temples have withstood the test of time. Kashi Vishwanatha, Shikareshwara and Sri Lakshmi Narayana temples are the remaining ones and each temple is unique. The Kashi Vishwanatha temple has two pillars in front of the temple unlike other South Indian temples and the Lakshmi Narayana temple is situated on a rock with natural footholds. As one proceeds further one can see remains of the palace, durbar halls, ammunition houses, jails, stables and bath complexes/swimming pools.

On proceeding further the traveler shall come across a small cave like structure in which one can find fresh water throughout the year. It is named as ‘Gadaa Theertha’ after Bheema’s Gadaa(mace) which was supposedly used to dig here. Further on the traveler can reach the hilltop which provides a breathtaking view of the Chakra and Varaahi rivers flowing through the magnificient Western Ghats. Kavaledurga is the place to be if one wants to experience history and architecture in pristine surroundings.
